Reports from February visit to Mityana

Dodie took a party to Mityana in February 2017. Apparently the internet availability was not great for this visit. Enclosed a couple of updates from her en route.

19 February

News is that all is good here. Caroline, Allan and Rosie arrived with the rest of the team. Loved yesterday when we met all the teachers and had the conference. It was just so good meeting up with everyone. 100 staff from our twelve schools. The three gappies came and helped and they start work at the deaf school tomorrow.

We have visited the deaf school to see how the land lay and we are off to Makonzi this morning for the service and then tomorrow the school. SMB had given us all kinds of things to do.

23 February

Please excuse the lack of news but the internet is worse than intermittent and the time is really short… not a huge excuse but true!

Makonzi was wonderful and the SMB team introduced themselves and the gappies, we watched an auction of the gifts for the church, the priest was new there and afterwards we all sat down with someone and found out about who they were and what they did and where they grew up etc. It all worked well and the others (to different churches) had similar experiences.

Monday we went back to Makonzi , Allan H went round the village taking photos, Caroline and Rosie made bean bags and we spent the day in school, well half a day and then we shot off to Bukuya (linked with East Woodhay) where they have a new headmaster. We toured the school and then sat down to the 2nd lunch of the day. Some of the old men on the management committee have been there ever since my first visit in 2005 and it was so lovely to see their commitment to the school.

Tuesday we were at the disabled children’s hospital and it was so good to see all Daniel (from Germany) is doing and how it is moving on. Some really terrible injuries but slowly, slowly they are being repaired.

Wednesday we went to the Kindergarten and had a dedication ceremony, and this was specially to Caroline’s aunt. We received a legacy from her will that enabled us to start and go half way to building the kindergarten. It was lovely to be there and the children sang and danced for us.

Today (Thursday) we are out to Ziira and Kabule. Ziira is the school the SMB youth groups have built and we will have lunch there. And in Kabule we are taking gifts for the very poorest of families. It has been heartbreaking to see all the maize ruined by drought and out in the villages there are families with serious food shortages.

And then we paint down at Afinnet (the vocational school) so that it be about it.
